Informing the Nordic glaciology community about Arctic extremes

In the annual International Glaciology Society (IGS) Nordic Branch meeting, this year held in Copenhagen, Denmark (29-30 October 2025), ARCTEX presented current insights on Arctic extremes.

Here we are, at this year’s IGS Nordic Branch meeting that took place in Copenhagen between 29-31 October 2025. Hosted by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland with support from the Technical University of Denmark, University of Copenhagen and the Danish Meteorological Institute, the annual meeting aims to provide a forum for scientists and students working on glaciology and related topics in the Nordic countries to present their most recent results in a relaxed and informal setting. From the ARCTEX team, Prof. Louise Sandberg Sørensen, Researcher Kirk Scanlan, and Postdoc Renée M. Fredensborg Hansen, all from DTU (see the full consortium on https://arctex.dtu.dk/consortium), participated.

During the meeting, Prof. Louise Sandberg Sørensen presented current activities taking place within Science Case 3 “Flade Isblink”. Here, the various EO-based approaches being investigated, along with current findings, and, most importantly, the many different open questions still present, were presented. 

The meeting offered three days full of riveting and inspiring science talks with high engagement by the participants, and great possibilities to discuss further collaborations or thoughts on extreme events in the Arctic.
